Na zijn wijding tot priester promoveerde Schaepman in Rome tot doctor in de theologie. In 1870 werd hij hoogleraar in de kerkgeschiedenis aan het seminarie Rijsenburg in Driebergen. In 1880 werd hij als één van de eerste katholieken en als eerste priester lid van de Tweede Kamer. Zijn invloed in de Kamer was groot: de christelijke kabinetten Mackay en Kuyper kwamen vooral door zijn inspanningen tot stand. Schaepman was ook dichter en prozaschrijver. Als maatschappelijk en politiek gezicht van de katholieken is hij van grote betekenis geweest voor de emancipatie van het katholieke volksdeel, sinds de Reformatie in de 16e eeuw een achtergestelde bevolkingsgroep in Nederland."@nl ;
