Na de bevrijding werd hij hoofdredacteur van Het Parool, en in 1947 Eerste Kamerlid voor de Partij van de Arbeid. In 1951 werd hij de eerste Hoge Commissaris voor de Vluchtelingen van de Verenigde Naties in Genève. Tijdens zijn ambtsperiode ontving het Hoge Commissariaat de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede."@nl ;
