  gtm:genoemdNaar "Genoemd naar Willem van Strijen (1687 - 1768), burgemeester van Gouda in de 18e eeuw. Van Strijen studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit in Leiden, waar hij in 1709 promoveerde. In 1705 werd hij poorter van Gouda. Hij was een neef van de Goudse burgemeester Hugo van Strijen en vervulde net als zijn oom tal van regentenfuncties in Gouda. Zo was hij lid van de vroedschap en kerkmeester van de Sint-Janskerk. In de laatstgenoemde functie had hij een groot aandeel in de totstandkoming van het Moreau-orgel. Het burgemeestersambt bleef aanvankelijk voor hem onbereikbaar, maar toen in 1748 de macht van de regerende factie onder leiding van Huijbert van Eijck en Willem van den Kerckhoven was gebroken, werd van Strijen als tegenstander van de zittende regenten alsnog benoemd tot burgemeester. Hij zou in die functie nog zesmaal worden herbenoemd (in 1749, 1752, 1753, 1755, 1757 en 1758). Van Strijen was zeer vermogend. In 1718 kocht hij drie koopmanspanden aan de Westhaven, die hij in 1728 liet verbouwen tot een monumentaal stadspaleis (West-haven 52)."@nl ;
