Pourbus, geboren in Gouda, vestigde zich al op jonge leeftijd in Brugge. In die stad was hij de belangrijkste kunstschilder in de tweede helft van de 16e eeuw. Zijn werken, die worden gerekend tot het maniërisme, een overgangsvorm tussen de renaissance en de barok, munten uit door minutieuze afwerking en precisie. Hij schilderde ook een aantal landkaarten. Als cartograaf en landmeter verwierf hij in Brugge en omgeving het meeste aanzien. Hij schilderde onder andere een altaarstuk voor de Sint-Janskerk, dat zich tegenwoordig in het Museum Gouda bevindt."@nl ;
