Vossius was aanvankelijk rector van de Latijnse school in Dordrecht. Van 1615 tot 1619 was hij regent van het Statencollege in Leiden. Aan de Leidse universiteit werd hij in 1622 benoemd tot hoogleraar in de welsprekendheid en de geschiedenis, later ook in het Grieks. In 1631 vertrok hij naar Amsterdam, waar hij met Caspar Barlaeus het Athenaeum Illustre oprichtte, en er rector en hoogleraar in de geschiedenis en staatswetenschap werd. Vossius was beroemd in Europa door zijn publicaties, die een groot deel van het terrein van de wetenschap van die dagen bestreken. Zo schreef hij handboeken over welsprekendheid, poëtica, taalkunde, theologie en geschiedenis."@nl ;
