Wanneer de polder is gesticht, is niet bekend, maar hij moet al vroeg in de 17e eeuw hebben bestaan. De naam Stadspolder dankt hij aan de bemaling door de 'Stadts mole' van Leiden, die kort na 1608 is gesticht voor de verversing van de stadsgrachten. De polder is in tweeën gesneden door de in 1608 aangelegde Stadsvuilsloot. Hier komt de poldernaam Grote en Kleine Stadspolder vandaan. Aan het einde van de 17e eeuw werd de benaming Slagh- of Grote en Kleine Stadspolder gebruikelijk. Als gevolg van de stadsuitbreidingen in de 20e eeuw kwam de gehele polder binnen Leiden te liggen. In de jaren zestig is besloten tot algehele ontpoldering en in 1968 is de Stadspolder opgeheven."@nl ;
