Schweitzer studeerde filosofie, theologie en medicijnen. In 1913 vertrok hij met zijn echtgenote naar Lambaréné in Gabon om daar een ziekenhuis te bouwen. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden de Schweitzers als Duitsers op Frans grondgebied geïnterneerd en naar Frankrijk gestuurd. Na hun vrijlating in 1918 kreeg Schweitzer een baan als medisch assistent in het Burgerziekenhuis in Straatsburg. In 1924 keerde Schweitzer naar Lambaréné terug om zijn medische werk te hervatten, afgewisseld met het geven van lezingen en concerten in Europa en de Verenigde Staten (hij was in zijn tijd ook een beroemde organist). Voor zijn werk in Lambaréné ontving hij in 1952 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede."@nl ;
