Hij was geen enorm productieve componist; in zijn latere leven was hij vooral een levensgenieter, die af en toe een opera schreef als hij even krap bij kas zat. De opera's die hij schreef zijn echter wereldberoemd, zoals 'Manon Lescaut', 'La Bohème', 'Tosca', 'Madame Butterfly', 'La Rondine', het drieluik 'Il trittico' en het onvoltooide 'Turandot'.
