  gtm:genoemdNaar "Genoemd naar prof. Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (1861 - 1930), een Noorse wetenschapper, ontdekkingsreiziger en diplomaat. Nansen was bioloog, gespecialiseerd in de zoölogie (dierkunde). Op 21-jarige leeftijd maakte hij zijn eerste reis naar de zeeën rond Groenland. In 1888 - 1889 stak hij op langlauf-ski's het 3000 meter hoge ijsmassief van Groenland over. In 1893 voer hij in het speciaal daarvoor gebouwde schip 'Fram' naar de Noordpool. Uiteindelijk kwam hij te voet tot 86° 14' noorderbreedte, destijds de dichtste benadering van de geografische Noordpool. In de jaren 1906 - 1908 was Nansen namens Noorwegen ambassadeur in Londen. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog kreeg hij een hoge functie in de Volkenbond, waarbij hij zich inzette voor het lot van vluchtelingen en statenlozen. Daarvoor ontving hij in 1922 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede."@nl ;
