In 1890 werd Emma tweemaal als regentes beëdigd: eerst voor haar zieke man en na diens overlijden voor haar minderjarige dochter. Tot Wilhelmina's achttiende verjaardag in 1898 was Emma als regentes het eerste vrouwelijke staatshoofd van Nederland. Na de troonsbestijging door Wilhelmina zette Emma zich in voor de bestrijding van tuberculose, toen volksziekte nummer één, en deed zij veel aan liefdadigheid."@nl ;
