Het stuk herinnert daarmee aan het uur van de dood en omvat dus een opvoedkundige boodschap (vandaar de titel 'Spiegel'). De schrijver is niet bekend. Het stuk wordt toegeschreven aan Peter van Diest (1454 - 1507), maar ook aan Petrus Dorlandus (1451 - 1507). Elckerlyc was in de middeleeuwen een bijzonder populair en succesvol theaterstuk."@nl ;
